Mr. and Mrs. David Beckham welcomed their new baby girl, Harper in an unusual way this past Sunday, it was via facebook. David uploaded the picture onto his facebook page with the caption “I took this picture of my two girls sleeping.” Victoria Beckham also tweeted a picture of baby Harper and dad on twitter the same day.

As we all know, facebook and twitter are becoming quite popular for celebrities to have and utilize as well. Apparently now, it is also popular to reveal your new-born’s photos through these sites as well. So much for new born photo shoots.

Whether this trend is going to spread to other celebs that want to reveal their personal news through social media is still in question. We all know it’s the fastest way to circulate information in today’s society. So rather than it hit the tabloids, it may be easier to “post” it yourself.

So welcome baby Harper, to Twitter, Facebook, and the world.

We have all heard about this new thriving trend called Google+, the question is just how popular is it? Within three weeks Google+ accumulated over 10 million users and shares over 1 million pieces of content daily according to a Mashable.com article. This social network contains several different types of social interaction. Some of these features are  Streams  which is a newsfeed, Sparks which is a recommendation engine, Hangouts which is a a video chat service, Huddle  which is a group texting service, Circles which is a friend management service and also photos options.  All of these features help users interact with others with lots of options. It is described as “Google+ is a much cleaner way to selectively share data with others. As Google integrates more of their other cloud products, like Documents, Calendar, and Reader, you’re going to see it become one of the primary means of absorbing the data streaming from the Internet and sharing it with others.” by Jason Poggioli. The wonderful thing about this new form of social media is that it has a guide on how to use it located on mashable.com. With all Google+ has to offer it is easy to see why it is becoming so popular and that it is indeed a new fad that may just stick around.

As graduation is fast approaching for me in the the next year, I have begun to research what jobs are available and what I need to do to get them. Since I am a communications major, social media is helping me accomplish this goal more and more. As I was reading through Mashable, I cam upon an article about LinkedIn and how it is helping people land the jobs they were looking for. The article said LinkedIn received about 85,000 job applications in the past year. And this was with out the count of people that people via LinkedIn contacted people on their own. This alone was reason enough for me to join. With the job market being the way it is today, anything that helps is wonderful. With over 1 million users, this social media tool has changed the way business are looking for employees. This beneficial tool is helping many job seekers connect with positions and companies for jobs from engineering to sales. With this beneficial form of social media available to anyone, it wouldn’t make sense not to join.

As I skimmed across facebook and twitter today I realized a consistent pattern of one thing, thank yous to everyone’s fathers. Rather than cards or phone calls in most cases, children were wishing their fathers and grandfathers to have a happy day via social media. I feel like this is one additional way that we are using various types of social media to share our thoughts and feelings. We are steering away from the traditions that we have always had and doing things in a faster and easier way. Have we lost personal touch with the ones we love? Is this new faster way of communicating just as beneficial to those involved? As it has become evident that we are only leaning closer to these forms of communication, it seems you better catch up or you will be left far behind. Or really sad because you got a comment rather than a card.
